4 WAYS TO DECORATE AROUND A DARK COUCH
October 07, 2015It's time to address the elephant in the room. The big dark leather couch. Some of you inherited it along with your husbands, for some it was a durable choice, and for others it was the ultimate in modern luxury.
Whatever reason you have it for, and pretty as it may be, we know it is still big and dark. I have one at home, and while it was a buying compromise with my husband (But you picked out everything else blah blah. Men!), I actually like it. It doesn't make my room too feminine, and at the same time I can still work around it to prevent it from looking like a man cave. The perfect mix, if you will.
But I gotta be honest with you. Sometimes when I browse through magazine pages full of beautiful bright white rooms, I cannot help but wish for a lighter couch.
So here are some of the ways I try and camouflage my couch so that it doesn't weigh down the whole room.
1. LAYER IT
The number one thing to do. Adding layers to any couch is always a good idea, and all the more reason if you have a dark couch. Layering adds a touch of coziness. Layers can be pillows, throws or textiles. Personally to me, a couch without layers feels undone. Plus, who doesn't like to plop on to a pile of pillows!
2. ADD TEXTURE
Leather can come across as cold. Adding texture definitely softens it. The two items I like to use are fur and knits. They instantly create a cozy feeling, and you will soon forget you are sitting on a cold brown couch.
3. LIGHTEN IT
While adding layers and texture is important, it pays to be mindful of the colors you choose. I like to incorporate light colors, like a white sheepskin throw, a light colored throw, one white pillow or atleast a pillow with a white backdrop. You don't have to use white everywhere, but some white is definitely a good idea.
4. BRIGHTEN THE SURROUNDINGS
Even if you layer, lighten and add texture, if your surroundings are dark, the room will still feel dark. Opt for a coffee table that looks and feels light like something in white, light wood tone or glass. Use lighter paint colors on the walls. Go with a brighter rug for some contrast. Avoid using heavy window treatments. And definitely lose the set. More and more people are opting for the non-matchy set these days, and I think it is really important to do that with a leather set to prevent it from looking too basement or den-like.
That's it folks! These are the some ways I lighten up my dark couch at home. Do you have more tips? I would love to hear from you!
Cheers,
Vinaya
